The Learning Center is the place where the
children apply the concepts that are taught in the classroom in
fun and different ways. They are working on math and language
skills, computer and Smartboard technology. The first and second
grade students come in Monday through Wednesday. Each child has
a "contract" with a list of educational and fun activities that
he/she needs to accomplish. It is their choice which ones they
would like to do on a particular day. They may be writing a
story, putting together a puzzle on homonyms, or practicing
addition/subtraction facts with Minko at his Milkshake Shoppe;
this is one of the activities on the Smartboard. The work is
done independently, but of course, if they need help Mrs. Kelm,
Ms. Pacovsky and parent volunteers are there willing to lend a
hand.
New this year is the addition of third and fourth grades to
Learning Center. They work in groups and do a different activity
each Thursday. They are participating in multiplication bingo,
finding main ideas, playing a shopping/money game, and a host of
other activities. Later in the year, they will be expanding
their science knowledge in an exciting game of bug bingo!
Another new addition this year is the touch screen computers. We
have exciting new software that the children will be using in
the upcoming weeks.
New parent volunteers are welcome for Monday, Tuesday, or
Wednesdays. You will be scheduled just once a month from 9:35 to
11:30. It is fun to watch the children develop their skills and
grow throughout the year. Please consider volunteering.
Thanks,
Mrs.Kelm
